Pınara had been founded by groups imigrated from Xanthos. In many ancient literature Pinara was mentioned to be the most important city of Lycia. It was one of the 3-vote holding cities of Lycian League.

Pınara means "round" in Lycian language. Many believe that the name of the city had come out of the great round rock on the way to city. Pınara had hold 3 votes in assembly of Lycian League, where its importance had been mentioned by ancient authors and historians.

The temple with six columns to the front and rear is believed to belong to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love.
